SAN FRANCISCO -- Tim Lincecum and two relievers combined on a five-hitter, and Lincecum drove in a run with a safety squeeze, helping the San Francisco Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0 on Friday night. Pablo Sandoval homered and drove in three runs to break out of a slump that extended back to late June. The Giants third baseman, hitting just .222 over his previous 16 games, also had an RBI-double and an infield single. Lincecum (9-5) allowed three hits over seven innings and fanned Gerado Parra to end a two-on, two-out jam in the seventh. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner, owner of a no-hitter this season, struck out six and walked two. Even longtime nemesis Paul Goldschmidt struggled against Lincecum. The Arizona first baseman went hitless in three plate appearances against the right-hander. It is the first time Lincecum has won four consecutive starts since April 5-23, 2010. During his current streak, he has given up just one run over 30 1-3 innings -- a remarkable 0.30 ERA. Lincecum helped himself at the plate and recovered after stumbling over the bag while covering first base on Aaron Hills infield grounder for the final out in the third. Juan Gutierrez pitched 1 1-3 innings and Jeremy Affeldt got the final two outs to complete the shutout. San Francisco had lost 15 of its last 19 games at AT&T Park before jumping on Arizona starter Mike Bolsinger (1-6) for two runs in the first and two more in the second. Sandoval got the Giants going with his 11th home run of the season, a two-run blast to right. Brandon Crawfords RBI single in the second made it 3-0. Lincecum followed with a safety squeeze to drive in Joe Panik, who walked and took third on Crawfords hit. Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt opened the fifth with consecutive singles before Sandoval doubled down the left field line to extend the Giants lead to 5-0. Bolsinger gave up five runs and eight hits over five innings. The Arizona rookie struck out five and walked two but is winless since April 24. Before the game the Giants activated second baseman Marco Scutaro from the disabled list. The 38-year-old infielder, who played a pivotal role in San Franciscos march toward the 2012 World Series championship, has not played this season because of a lower back strain. The Diamondbacks welcomed back one of their key players but didnt get the same spark. The Detroit defensive tackle was docked $100,000 by the NFL for his illegal low block on Minnesota centre John Sullivan in the Lions season-opening victory Sunday. Suh hit Sullivan during an interception return by Detroit linebacker DeAndre Levy, and the penalty negated what would have been a touchdown. NFL spokesman Randall Liu said Tuesday that vice-president of football operations Merton Hanks notified Suh of the fine. Suh was not in the locker room at Detroits practice facility when it was open to reporters Tuesday. A text message was sent to him seeking comment. Suh said Sunday he wasnt going after Sullivans knees, adding that the two had discussed the play at halftime. Detroit players said Suh apologized to the team Tuesday. "He just basically said that he cant make those types of mistakes -- he cant put us in a position where weve got to battle back from mistakes like that," wide receiver Nate Burleson said. "He also said, with him having a target, and people looking for him, theyre looking at us in the same light. So as a team weve got to understand that the microscope is on us." Its believed to be the largest fine for an NFL player for an on-field violation, although suspensions without pay can result in bigger financial hits. The NFL fined Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison $75,000 for a 2010 hit on Cleveland wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, although that was later reduced to $50,000. Like Harrison, Suh has a history of fines. The NFL fined Suh $$30,000 last year for unnecessary roughness when he kicked Houston quarterback Matt Schaub in the groin area.dddddddddddd He was suspended two games in 2011 after stomping on Green Bays Evan Dietrich-Smith. Burleson was taken aback when told of Suhs fine. "Oh, baby! For real? Are you serious? A hundred stacks?" Burleson said. "Thats one of the biggest Ive heard of, but when you have a guy who people look at as quote-unquote dirty, a play that might not be as dirty could be deemed as such, and youre going to have to deal with the consequences. So its tough. I hope he appeals it, because I dont think that was worthy of being fined $100,000." Suh has also been fined in previous seasons for roughing up quarterbacks Andy Dalton, Jay Cutler and Jake Delhomme. "He plays with such aggression," Lions centre Dominic Raiola said. "He really plays hard, and plays to the whistle every play." When asked what he would think if a player with a track record rolled up on his knees and was fined $100,000, Raiola was unsure. "I dont know if he really went down," Raiola said. "I think he kind of hit him on the hip and fell. ... Thats out of my hands." Suh was named a defensive captain for the Lions this season, and theyre hoping his fourth year as a pro will be a productive one. Raiola said Suhs talk with the team Tuesday was a good step. "Thats all part of his leadership role this year," Raiola said. "We respect that, and Im just glad were not losing him for any games." ' ' ' |
