BOSTON -- So much for Bostons mini surge of offence. The Red Sox managed just two hits and were beaten by the Chicago White Sox 4-0 on Monday night, Bostons sixth loss in seven games. Scott Carroll pitched 6 2-3 innings of one-hit ball, and Dayan Viciedo hit a three-run homer off Clay Buchholz in the fourth as Boston was shut out for the ninth time this season and tied its season-low hit output. Adam Dunn also homered off Buchholz, but he recovered well from the rocky start and kept the Red Sox in the game. All four runs came on home runs as Buchholz (3-5) allowed five hits, struck out a season-high seven and walked one. "Its been real frustrating, especially tonight. Buchholz threw a good game," said Boston leadoff hitter Brock Holt, who went 0-for-4. "We werent able to get anything going. Two hits. Two singles." A.J. Pierzynskis third-inning single was the lone hit off Carroll. Jackie Bradley Jr. singled off Javy Guerra to lead off the eighth for the only other Red Sox hit. Boston entered Monday having scored 22 runs in its last four games, but allowed 32 during the same span. Buchholz was willing to talk about the mistakes he made to Dunn in the second and Viciedo in the fourth, but stood up for his teammates when asked about the lack of run support. The Red Sox scored just one run in his previous start, a 2-1 loss to the Cubs in Boston. "Im done talking about the offence. Its not like theyre out there not trying or anything," he said. "Its just not working right now. Im not going to answer any more questions about our offence." Making the eighth -- and best -- start of his career, Carroll (3-5) walked two and struck out five while shutting down the defending World Series champions. Dunn hit a solo homer in the second inning and doubled and scored on Viciedos home run in the fourth. The start of the game was delayed by 39 minutes because of severe weather moving through the area. There were two brief but torrential downpours during the game that sent fans scurrying but didnt stop play. A person who lives a life about which most can only dream. Remember, though, these guys are human beings. Wandering around the clubhouse before Saturdays game against the Rays, the stench of a listless effort still lingered. The Jays had been shut out the night before, two-hit by an opposing pitcher for the second time in three games. Sometimes, players arent that far removed from the fanbase. Theyre stumped about the slump. They have similar inquiries. One player pondered this in a casual conversation with TSN.ca: “What I cant understand is when did we get so bad?” This is a club at a crossroads. Its a team that from a positional perspective is built to win now. Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion, Adam Lind, Melky Cabrera and Jose Reyes are in the primes of their careers. Aside from Mississauga native, outfielder Dalton Pompey (now with Triple-A Buffalo), there are no positional prospects of consequence playing higher than A-ball. From a pitching perspective, theres a veteran presence featuring R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle and J.A. Happ, but its clear where the franchise is headed. Its rotation will be built around Aaron Sanchez, Marcus Stroman, Daniel Norris and, perhaps, Sean Nolin. The Jays are poised to build around their cadre of young pitching. If thats the case, its unrealistic to expect 200 innings and dominating 2015 seasons from those arms. Is the time coming to trade seasoned veterans to help replenish the positional prospect pool with major league-ready or near-major league ready players? At what point does Jose Bautista, who will be 34 in October, believe hes got a better shot at an elusive playoff appearance somewhere else? Will Adam Linds $7.5-million option be picked up or will the club buy him out for $1-million and go in a different direction? Casey Janssen, Colby Rasmus and Brandon Morrow are almost assuredly gone,, although the latter could return should he agree to lesser terms after his $10-million club option is declined.dddddddddddd. Should potential suitors be investigated for Buehrle and Dickey? Would there be any interest? There may be, but likely only if the Blue Jays are willing to eat part of Buehrles ($19-million) and Dickeys ($12-million) 2015 salaries. What should be particularly concerning to fans is that some players believe others in the room are still moping about the clubs relative inactivity leading up to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. Heres the problem: whats done is done or, in this case, what wasnt done, wasnt done. The players need to rally around one another, forget all else and play to win each day. The problem is some players were hoping for and expecting a move, or moves, at the deadline because they felt the team had significant holes that needed to be plugged. The August record of 5-13, entering Saturdays play, serves to confirm that notion and results in lingering frustration. It becomes a vicious circle. Guys who are upset nothing got done and are annoyed they werent addressed by the general manager or team president in the aftermath of July 31 begin to believe the organization doesnt care. Its impossible to imagine anybody not caring but, as is often the case in life, how an individual perceives a matter is his reality. The Jays offence is suffering from a power outage (10 home runs in August). The team that was stealing bases and using the hit and run during Mays hot stretch isnt doing much of that anymore. Jose Reyes has six stolen bases since the All-Star Break and Anthony Gose is back to plying his trade at Triple-A, the victim of being a guy with options. Meanwhile the pitching has gone into a funk in August (5.10 staff ERA). The team is struggling. Its playoff hopes are dwindling. Baseball is a game of failures, confidence can waver. If the Blue Jays are to make one final, desperate run toward an unlikely playoff spot, the team must first believe its good enough to do so. ' ' 'g the first anniversary of Mandela’s passing, The Giant of Africa presented by Bell was a pre-game celebration of the late former South African President and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Funds raised by the event will support both the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Giants of Africa, a not-for-profit organization founded by Ujiri in 2003 to continue to educate and enrich the lives of African youth. As he stepped to the front of the packed house gathered in the teams transformed upper level practice court (which had been rapidly transformed into a red carpet event space for the occasion), the first African-born General Manager in NBA history promised to refrain from firing up the crowd in advance of the impending game, recounting instead the way that meeting Mandela changed his life. Ujiri went on to share his personal reflections on Mandelas legacy, saying, I dont know where the world is going, but Mandela made the world a better place. And even though hes passed, he is going to continue to grow. Through whether it was poverty, diseases, or injustice, Nelson Mandela is a man that stood for us, and the world needs that. The world deserves that. Courtesy: Giants of Africa Twitter The GMs address was a prelude to a panel discussion moderated by TSN’s James Duthie featuring the evenings celebrity guests: a trio of NBA legends in Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, and Dikembe Mutombo, along with UN Goodwill Ambassador and 1999 Miss Universe winner Mpule Kwelagobe. Much of the panel discussion revolved around the guests personal memories of meeting Mandela, as well as his lifelong determination to create hope and encourage global harmony. Courtesy: Giants of Africa Twitter For me it was a dream come true to meet someone who lifted the world up, taught us so much, inspired me to do what I do every day: look after my people on the continent of Africa. I learned all those lessons from this great man, said Mutombo. It was a group of 14 of us, we had many NBA officials there, and the person he called the name of was Mutombo!!! The NBA legends also touched on the Raptors remarkable run so far this season. After Barkley complimented Toronto, calling the city a clean New York, Johnson commended the team for being a reflection of the tenacity of their GM, and built the case for the Raptors to find success going forward. Theyre a real team, and all they have to do now is build on what happened last season in the playoffs. You always have to gauge yourself on the best, you use that as a barometer to [measure], Okay, where are we against Cleveland, Chicago, Washington? And, Johnson added to the roar of the crowd, the fan base is crazy. That arena last year in the playoffs was one of the loudest arenas Ive ever seen. Other notable guests at the event included Raptors alumnus Tracy McGrady, Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Jonathan Bernier, Maple Leafs President Brendan Shanahan, TIFF Artistic Director Cameron Bailey, Toronto Argos legend Michael “Pinball” Clemons, NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum, and Amadou Fall, Vice President of NBA Africa.
