MILWAUKEE -- The Cincinnati Reds offence had a tough time against Kyle Lohse on Friday night. The Brewers starter retired 23 consecutive batters at one point and finished with a four-hitter, and Carlos Gomez went 3 for 4 with 5 RBIs, lifting the Brewers to a 5-1 win. The Reds wild-card lead dropped to 4 1/2 games over the surging Washington Nationals, who have won seven straight games. Ryan Ludwick lost a ball in the lights that went for a key double, and two of Gomezs singles were bloop hits. The Reds struggled against Lohse, but had some hard-hit balls hit directly to infielders. "We hit the ball, actually, better than they did," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. Gomez had a two-run single in the first, an RBI single in the third and a two-RBI single in the seventh to account for all of Milwaukees runs. The Brewers centre fielder was coming off a tough road trip, batting .150, and had hit only .116 against the Reds this season coming into the game. "I guess that was his night when things like that happen over and over," Baker said. "But we didnt help ourselves on the defensive side of the ball and with walks." There was not a lot of luck involved in Lohses fine performance. Cincinnati had three consecutive singles to open the second, but then had 23 batters in a row retired before Jay Bruce walked with two outs in the ninth. "Pitching a game like this as a spoiler -- it feels good," Lohse said. "Youve got to look at it as your playoff situation. "These guys are more than likely going to be in the playoffs," he said. "Were not going to knock them out or anything. But to be able to go out there and pitch against a playoff-calibre team, it makes you feel good. That lineup can swing it quite a bit." The Reds have dropped three of four. "We made some hard outs, but youve got to give him a little bit of credit," Ludwick said. "He missed a lot of bats tonight. He had a lot of balls off the end of the bat." Lohse (10-9) started the season 1-6 after missing most of spring training, signing with the Brewers as a free agent on March 25. Since the slow start, he has gone 9-3. After allowing three consecutive singles to open the second, Lohse recorded an out on Devin Mesoracos RBI fielders choice grounder to third. "He had a little trouble there in the second, but he really threw the ball well all game and even got better the later we got in the game," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said. Lohse, who went 30-11 for St. Louis over two seasons in 2011-12, walked one and struck out five. He rebounded from a poor outing in his last start, where he allowed seven runs in five innings in an 8-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Sept. 6. Reds starter Mat Latos (14-6) allowed five runs -- the most he has given up since the All-Star break -- and seven hits and three walks while striking out four in 6 2/3 innings. "Its just one of those days where you just have to hit the reset button and go after them again the next time you go out," Latos said. Norichika Aoki led off the first with a four-pitch walk. One out later, Ludwick appeared to lose sight of Jonathan Lucroys sharp liner to left field, and it went by him to the wall for a double. Aramis Ramirez was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Gomez hit a bloop single to right, scoring Aoki and Lucroy to make it 2-0. Ludwick, Jack Hannahan and Zack Cozart had consecutive singles to open the second, and Mesoraco grounded into a fielders choice to third that scored Ludwick. Latos hit a sacrifice bunt to move Mesoraco to second, but Shin-Soo Choo struck out to end the inning. The Reds were retired in order in each inning until Bruces walk in the ninth. Milwaukee loaded the bases in the seventh, and Gomez hit a two-run single off reliever J.J. Hoover to make it 5-1. Notes: Gomez also had five RBIs on July 12, 2009, while with Minnesota against the Chicago White Sox. ... Ramirez was removed after the first inning after being hit by a pitch from Latos. The team said he suffered a contusion on his left wrist and was day to day. . Parnell will be out much longer if it turns out he needs surgery. But first, he will try resting for two weeks before beginning a throwing program that could last up to a month, general manager Sandy Alderson said. . PAUL, Minn – The clock lingered for what seemed like an interminable two minutes and 51 seconds before Mark Fraser finally escaped to the bench during a wildly one-sided first period of an eventual loss to Boston. http://www.oilersauthority.com/authenti ... rs-jersey/. He managed to save par, and went on to put together his best opening round of the year. Calcavecchia and Wes Short Jr. . -- Those impatient for the Stanley Cup to return to Canada will have just one team to root for in the NHL playoffs -- the Montreal Canadiens. . And thats about it. After the Salukis 73-65 loss at Murray State on Tuesday night, Hinson called his players "uncoachable," "a bunch of mamas boys" and compared the disciplining of his young team to housebreaking a puppy.CALGARY -- After missing a 40-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, Tyler Crapigna regained his composure to lead the Calgary Stampeders to a 23-20 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The rookie kicker booted a pair of 42-yard field goals, the second with no time remaining on the clock, to lead the Stampeders to a thrilling CFL pre-season victory. "Ive been in some of these situations before, playing in the Vanier Cup a couple years ago, but I was happy just to get another chance to show what I can do out here," said Crapigna, who kicked a 20-yard field goal in double overtime to lift the McMaster Marauders to a 41-38 win over the Laval Rouge et Or to win the 2011 Vanier Cup. "You definitely dont want to end on that missed field goal for sure. I was a little nervous, but I just kind of decided to take it slow and a lot of the guys were helping me." Winnipeg rallied from a pair of early 14-point deficits to take a 20-17 lead over Calgary before the Stampeders rallied for the victory in front of an announced crowd of 27,103 fans at McMahon Stadium. Playing their second game in six days, the Bombers also lost their pre-season opener at home to the Toronto Argonauts on Monday. "This is worse, absolutely," said Winnipeg coach Mike OShea. "We had a chance to win it. We made enough mistakes that it didnt allow us to win." Drew Tate and Bo Levi Mitchell split time at quarterback for Calgary in the first half. Tate completed 2-of-5 passes and ran for a one-yard touchdown, while Mitchell went 8-for-11 for 76 yards and also engineered a lengthy scoring drive. Bryant Moriz and Rusty Smith also saw time under centre in the second half for the Stampeders. Smith tossed a key 26-yard completion to Damon McDaniel on the final drive of the game to help set up Crapignas game-winning field goal. "Thats the bottom line to get this W," said Damon McDaniel, whos trying to earn a spot on the Stampeders at wide receiver to play alongside his older brother Marquay. "Its all about this win. Whatever I can do to help this team win, Ill do it. The game speed is a lot different from practice, so its something that I had to get used to. I just wanted to go out there and play fast and have fun." Starting Winnipeg quarterback Drew Willy completed 14-of-23 passes for 172 yards, but couldnt find the end zone. Instead, the Bombers had to settle for three field goals and one single with Willy leading the offence. Rookie quarterback Brian Brohm took oveer from Willy in the third quarter and engineered an 11-play, 77-yard drive that culminated with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Kelly.dddddddddddd Brett Maher and Lirim Hajrullahu both kicked a pair of field goals for the Bombers, while punter Mike Renaud kicked a 59-yard single. Former Saskatchewan Roughrider Jock Sanders gave Calgary great field position with a 49-yard return of the opening kickoff. Just four plays later, Tate plunged into the end zone for a one-yard touchdown to cap off a four-play, 52-yard scoring drive. With Mitchell in at quarterback, the Stampeders struck again at 14:35 of the opening quarter when Sanders scampered for an 18-yard touchdown. Mitchell completed four-of-five passes for 41 yards before Sanders completed the 59-yard drive with his TD run. The Bombers finally got on the board at 3:22 of the second quarter when Maher connected on a field goal from 33 yards out. After Rene Paredes answered back with a 41-yard field goal for Calgary, Winnipeg rounded out the scoring in the first half with Renauds punt single followed by a 42-yard field goal by Hajrullahu. Winnipeg started off the second half with consecutive 77-yard scoring drives as Hajrullahu booted a 14-yard field before Kelly hauled in a 29-yard touchdown pass from Brohm. "I love the way that we came out at the start of the second half," OShea said. "They need to look at it and be pleased with that effort and correct the mistakes that were made. You cant pat yourselves on the back for too long. Youve got to appreciate that we did some good things in the second half, but we still didnt do enough to win." The Bombers then went up 20-17 at 7:35 of the fourth quarter when Maher kicked a 26-yard field goal to cap off a 12-play, 74-yard scoring drive. With 1:34 left in regulation, Crapigna kicked a 42-yard field goal to pull the Stampeders into a 20-20 tie before the rookie duplicated the feat as time ran out on the game. Notes: Calgary linebacker Max Caron had to be taken off the field in a cart late in the first half after hitting the turf hard. a Winnipeg defensive back Graig Newman then went down awkwardly early in the third quarter and had to be loaded onto a stretcher and into an ambulance in front of worried teammates who gathered around him in support. a The Stampeders will travel to Vancouver to face the B.C. Lions to round out their exhibition schedule on June 20. . . . CFL teams must reduce their training camp rosters to 65 players by 11:59 ET on Sunday. ' ' '
