CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis signed a one-year contract extension Friday, keeping him on the job through the 2015 season. Lewis has led the Bengals to three straight playoff berths, a first for the franchise that began play in 1968. But the Bengals are 0-5 in the playoffs under Lewis. His 90 career victories are the most in Bengals history by 26 over Sam Wyche (64). His record is 90-85-1 in the regular season. Lewis 11 seasons are the most for a Bengals head coach. "Im blessed to continue to do a job I love here in Cincinnati," said Lewis, 55. "I truly appreciate the commitment by our management to continue to enable us to build an NFL championship team." The Bengals went 11-5 last season and won the AFC North. They fell at home to San Diego in the wild-card playoff round after losses to Houston the previous two years in the opening week of the post-season. Still, Lewis has brought continuity and organization to the Bengals, even if they have not won a playoff game since the 1990 season. Lewis lost both co-ordinators in the off-season, with Mike Zimmer becoming head coach in Minnesota and Jay Gruden taking over in Washington. "Marvin has earned this commitment for the job he is doing," said Bengals president Mike Brown. "We are one of only five teams to qualify for the playoffs the last three years, and our prospects are bright looking ahead. Milwaukee, Atlanta and Boston (the other three playoff teams from this past season) are all going to have a different and possibly weaker look next season. The six, seven and eight spots are up for grabs. Im as curious as all of you what the Raps decide to do in the coming months with their team building plan. Do they try to develop a winning/playoff environment during the 2013-14 season or go the developmental route and try to acquire assets for down the line? Your guess is as good as mine. DWANE CASEY (Toronto Raptors): Announced last week that hell be back as the head coach. Beyond staff decisions, player development and putting together the roster with GM Masai Ujiri, a huge component of improving the team in 2013-14 will be how they perform/execute in the fourth quarter of games. Situational basketball performance is the make/break aspect of teams and coaches. Im sure Casey and his new staff will take significant time between now and the start of evaluating each and every fourth quarter this past season where the Raptors let a lead slip away that resulted in a loss. Way too many times this took place and it will be the defining judgment piece for this upcoming season. How you perform under the pressure of the fourth quarter spotlight in the NBA is usually the make/break aspect of a team, season and coaching staff. Control to the best of your ability what you can control and move those chess pieces in an appropriate/timely manner and the narrative of a season becomes more fun to watch. ' ' '
