OAKLAND, Calif. - Infielder Eric Sogard has reached a $1,075,000, one-year contract with the Oakland Athletics to avoid salary arbitration, and left-hander Fernando Abad also agreed to a one-year deal Friday.Sogard, who earned $510,000 last year, asked for $1,425,000, while the As offered $900,000.Abad will earn $1,087,500. He had a 1.57 ERA over a career-high 69 appearances in his first full season in the majors last year with Oakland, when he made $525,900. Abad requested $1,225,000, and the As proposed $850,000.Sogard batted .223 with a home run and 22 RBIs in 117 games for the As last season. Of his 92 starts — 80 at second base and 12 at shortstop — 88 were against right-handed pitchers. OAKLAND, Calif. -- Now that hes a key part of the Athletics starting rotation, Drew Pomeranz has tried to maintain the same aggressive approach on the mound that he had coming out of the bullpen. Making his second start of the season after replacing Dan Straily as Oaklands fourth starter, Pomeranz and three relievers combined on a four-hit shut out as the As beat the Chicago White Sox 9-0 on Tuesday night for their sixth consecutive win. "Thats that mentality, Im kind of just trying to go right after people," Pomeranz said. "Thats what I was doing out of the bullpen and I had success doing that. I dont see any reason to change that." Pomeranz (3-1) went five shutout innings in his first start on May 7 and matched that with another stellar five-inning outing against Chicago.
