Mark Sanchez and Michael Vick have traded places. Bounced out of New York after the Jets signed Vick last Friday, Sanchez has moved down turnpike and signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. A news conference is scheduled for Friday "Ive said many times that we will always look to add quality players at the quarterback position," Eagles coach Chip Kelly said in a statement. He called the signing a "no-brainer." "Mark has started 68 games in his career and has taken his teams deep into the playoffs multiple times, so we really like what he brings to the table from an experience standpoint," Kelly said. "I also had the chance to see Mark play in college and have always had respect for his game and athletic ability." Sanchez spent last season on injured reserve after tearing the labrum in his right shoulder in a preseason game. He led the Jets to the AFC championship game his first two seasons in the NFL before struggling the next two. Sanchez had an NFL-leading 52 turnovers in 2012-13. Sanchez, in his sixth year in the league, will be added to a mix of quarterbacks that includes Nick Foles, Matt Barkley and G.J. Kinne. In college, Barkley succeeded Sanchez at Southern California. "You can never have enough talent at the quarterback position on your roster, so when Mark became available we immediately became interested," Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said. Roseman pointed to Sanchezs "valuable experience." "Hell have the chance to come in and learn the playbook, and we feel hell be a nice veteran addition to the quarterback room," he said. Sanchez was the fifth overall pick in the 2009 draft and drew comparisons to Joe Namath in New York. He had seemingly beat out rookie Geno Smith for the starting job in a preseason competition last August before getting hurt. Sanchez has thrown 68 touchdown passes, 69 interceptions and lost 20 fumbles. His career completion percentage is just 55.1 and his passer rating is only 77.1. While Vick will compete with Smith for the starting job in New York, Sanchez is coming to Philadelphia as insurance. Foles had a breakout sophomore season and led the Eagles to the NFC East title after replacing an injured Vick in Week 5. Foles threw 29 touchdowns and only two interceptions in 11 starts, including a playoff loss to New Orleans. . Not that Durant cared. If the Czechs beat Slovakia on Tuesday, they will go through. If they lose, Germany will get the last quarter-final berth.Already looking at an uphill climb to end a five-year playoff drought, the Carolina Hurricanes job got even tougher with the news that Jordan Staal will have surgery on his broken right leg and miss three to four months. Staal will have surgery Friday in Raleigh, N.C., according to general manager Ron Francis, to repair a fractured fibula. The 26-year-old from Thunder Bay, Ont., was injured when he got tangled up with Buffalo Sabres defenceman Josh Gorges on Tuesday night. Thats tough, Gorges said Wednesday when told of Staals injury but before anyone knew how long hed be out. Hes a good player for that team. You dont want to see a guy go down like that the first game of the pre-season. This is the latest in a series of freak injuries for the Staal brothers in Carolina. Eric took a hit from Alex Edler at the 2013 world hockey championship that led to a strained ligament in his right knee and had surgery to repair a core muscle injury this past summer. Jordan Staal had been an iron man since the Hurricanes acquired him from the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 2012 draft, playing in all 130 games since the trade. He began a US$60-million, 10-year contract last season. Staals injury puts a dent in the Hurricanes plans to start the season under new coach Bill Peters.dddddddddddd Hes a big piece of what were going to do moving forward, Peters told reporters in Buffalo on Tuesday night. Not having Staal for the first half of the season means the Hurricanes will have to lean more heavily on Elias Lindholm and Riley Nash. And the onus is always on Eric, the captain. This NHL pre-season has included a handful of high-profile injuries, including Pavel Datsyuks shoulder and Claude Girouxs groin. But much like the New York Rangers Derek Stepan missing the first four to six weeks with a fractured fibula, Jordan Staals break was a case of bad luck and timing. The puck got moved up to him, I stepped in front of him to try to separate him from the play, Gorges recalled. We got kind of tangled up. He tried to grab around me to switch positions and the next thing I know he fell, mustve got tangled up and I went right over top of him. It was one of those plays that as soon as I landed on him, I heard him scream. I knew right away something mustve been hurt. A referee came over to tell Gorges that Staals injury looked pretty ugly. The long-term prognosis didnt turn out to be any better. You dont like to see that, and I hope he has a quick recovery, Gorges said. Thats a tough break, I feel for him. ' ' '
