DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings set themselves up to win a season-high third straight game at home without their two best players. They blew it. Nick Bjugstad scored in a shootout and Tim Thomas denied Detroit three times in one-on-one duels, lifting the Florida Panthers to a 5-4 win over the Red Wings on Sunday night after trailing by two goals twice in regulation. "There were many things we didnt do right, but we got two points in a character game," Florida coach Peter Horachek said. The Red Wings, who were without injured stars Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, allowed Brad Boyes to score a game-tying, short-handed goal with 3:46 left in the third period — a couple minutes after teammate Drew Shore scored. "We deserved to win this game and we did lots of good things," said Detroits Tomas Tatar, whose third-period goal put Detroit up 4-2. "We ended up short. Hockey is 60 minutes and you cant stop after 55 and let them win the game." Detroits Gustav Nyquist and Daniel Alfredsson scored 1:19 apart midway through the second and Riley Sheahan had a goal late in the second period to give the Red Wings a 3-1 lead. "When youre up 3-1, should you win? Yup," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "When youre up 4-2 should you win? Absolutely. We didnt." Jonas Gustavsson, filling in for the injured Jimmy Howard, had 33 saves in his third straight start for the Red Wings. Thomas stopped 26 shots, and was fortunate defenceman Tom Gilbert kicked away a shot in overtime. "It looked like a goal to me, they had pretty much an empty net, and he stuck his foot out there and made a big save," Horachek said. "Thats character. Thats the way you find ways to win." After the win, Thomas was able to joke about the assist he got from Gilbert. "I was going to make the save but I saw him laying there," he said. "Everybody is pitching in any way they can." The Panthers started and finished strong. Sean Bergenheim put the Panthers ahead just 1:48 into the game. In between, they bounced back well enough to stay in the game and ultimately to force overtime and the shootout. After the Red Wings surged ahead 3-1 in the second, Jesse Winchester pulled the Panthers within a goal midway through the third. Tatar restored the two-goal lead a few minutes later by shooting high when Thomas went low. Shore scored to make it 4-3 with 5:32 left in the game. "We stopped shooting the puck a little bit in the third and tried to get cute," Babcock said. Zetterberg was a late scratch with a back injury after being hurt in Friday nights game against Montreal. "Hes been having back issues, we knew that," Babcock said. "You come to the rink hopeful hes going to play." Zetterberg missed 11 games with a back injury in December. Datsyuk missed a 10th straight game with a lower-body injury. Both stars are day to day. The Red Wings did get forward Johan Franzen back in the lineup after he missed 16 games with a concussion. Howard has been out with an injured left knee and he might play Tuesday night at Philadelphia. Forward Joakim Andersson missed his sixth straight game with a lower-body injury, and is expected to return against the Flyers or Friday night against Washington. NOTES: To make room for Franzen on the roster, Detroit sent RW Mikael Samuelsson to play for Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL. Samuelsson has only one goal and just two assists in 26 games. ... Florida rookie Aleksander Barkov didnt play because of a lower-body injury from Tuesdays game at Buffalo. ... Nyquist has scored in a career-high four straight games. . In Englands first game since its worst-ever World Cup showing, Roy Hodgsons side rarely looked like scoring against unambitious opposition and the breakthrough in the friendly only came when Raheem Sterling was tripped in the penalty area. . A fifth MVP trophy. Peyton Manning is more productive than hes ever been, and whether hes deciphering defences at the line of scrimmage on game day or on his iPad during the week, his love for the game hasnt waned. The final piece of evidence that Manning is as good as ever came Monday. As expected, Manning passed the exam on his surgically repaired neck that was required by his contract with the Broncos that will pay him $20 million next season, according to a person with knowledge of the results. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because results of medical checkups typically arent announced. Manning has said that if doctors tell him hes at risk physically, hed have no problem calling it a career. After his four neck procedures, including a spinal fusion that sidelined him for all of 2011 and eventually led to his release from Indianapolis, Manning has said he has steeled himself for that possibility. At the Super Bowl last month, he talked about how his older brother, Cooper, had to give up football after neck surgeries in high school and college, and how that had a big impact on his life. "I remember at the time, when Cooper got injured, they did a test on me and Eli. I would have been a junior in high school and Eli would have been a sixth-grader, or something. They said our necks werent picture perfect and didnt look ideal, but theyre stable enough to keep playing football. Cooper had to give up playing football. In some ways, when I had my neck problems, I thought maybe I had been on borrowed time this entire time," Manning said. "I was fortunate to have 20 years of health to play football. If that was going to be the end of it because of a neck injury, I really, believe it or not, had a peace about it.dddddddddddd" Once doctors told him his neck was secure, however, Manning said he quickly shifted his focus to seeing if he could strengthen his weakened throwing arm to the point where he could be productive again. After the Colts released him, Manning signed a five-year, $96 million deal in Denver, where hes thrown for 100 TDs, including the playoffs, while going 28-7 with two AFC titles. Manning won his fifth MVP award in 2013, when he set single-season records by passing for 5,547 yards and 55 TDs while guiding the Broncos, the highest-scoring team in NFL history, to their first Super Bowl in 15 seasons. Manning, who will be 38 next season, said during Super Bowl week that he had no intention of retiring after the Super Bowl. Although Mannings plans for 2014 became a big story line in the playoffs, the Broncos front office had proceeded as though their quarterback would be returning for another run at a title. Although his deal with Denver requires him to pass a physical every spring to make sure his neck is OK, if there were any concerns about his neck, he wouldnt have started all 16 games, plus three more in the playoffs. Not only is Manning still performing at his peak level, he said he still enjoys everything that goes into getting ready to play on game days and "when you still enjoy the preparation, I think you probably still ought to be doing that," he said at the Super Bowl. He passed his required exit physical that all players take in the days following the Broncos Super Bowl loss to Seattle. He then played in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament just days later, another indication that his neck is fine. ' ' ' |
