WINNIPEG - Two teams share the top of the standings on the womens sides at the Canadian Olympic Curling trials, with Jennifer Jones and Val Sweeting sit at 3-1. Sweeting is technically in the lead among the women, thanks to handing Jones her only loss so far. But at this point, its what happens next that all 16 teams know matters most. "It will be the turning point Wednesday, Thursday, obviously," said Heather Nedohin, who handed Sweeting her first loss with a last rock draw to win a tight game 6-5. "I dont think anyone at the trials ever has done this undefeated," said Sweeting. "I thought we just got outplayed." Both teams curl out of the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton. Nedohin sits in a four-team logjam below the leaders at 2-2 with Nedohin and Renee Sonnenberg at 1-3, a spot unlikely to give them a shot at moving on. "Three losses is going to be tough to make it in," said the skip from Grande Prairie, Alta. "If we can finish above .500 thats a feather in our hat too." Jones dominated Sonnenberg from start to finish Tuesday shaking hands at 7-2 after the eighth. It was a solid comeback after Monday nights 9-6 loss to Sweeting, which included a disastrous four in the seventh end. "I dont know if we gave it away, we just made too many mistakes so it wasnt our best effort," said Jones. "I thought we bounced back as well as could have today." Saskatoons Stefanie Lawton earned her second win with a 7-5 decision over Winnipegs Chelsea Carey and in an all-Ontario game. Sherry Middaugh bowed 6-5 to Rachel Homan in an extra end. . To be fair, the celebrations are already anything but tame. Nerf ball tricks shots are just the tip of the iceberg for a group that has performed in zero gravity, faced pro-skateboarder Rob Dyrdek and an assembled team on the MTV series "Fantasy Factory", and even hit a basketball trick shot from a passing blimp. . The team also announced Tuesday that the Braves will wear a commemorative patch on the right sleeve during the season. The patch, shaped like home plate, carries the number 715, Aarons autograph and a "40th Anniversary" banner. . Lauzon rushed for 42 yards on 15 carries for the Vert et Or (2-3) while quarterback Jeremi Roch completed 19-of-32 passes for 251 yards and one interception. Alexandre Aube scored the other touchdown for Sherbrooke. . -- Stanley Johnson scored all 18 of his points in the second half, T. . And theyre pointing to the NHLs biggest market: Toronto. With Gretzky paid out for what is believed to be $7 to 8 million, Gretzky may be eager to get back into the NHL and TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reports that the Maple Leafs are very much interested in The Great Ones services.CLEVELAND - Indians centre fielder Michael Bourn could be sidelined for one month because of a strained left hamstring. The team said an MRI taken on Monday confirmed a "mild to moderate" sprain and Bourn will miss at least three weeks. Bourn has had issues with the hamstring all season. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday. Cleveland manager Terry Francona said Bourn will be out "a little bit longer" than originally thought. The team hoped Bourn would return soon after the All-Star break, but the MRI results have changed that plan. "It was little more significant than Bournie hoped or we had all hoped," Francona said. "It shows hes a pretty tough kid. He wanted to try to play this weekend. It more looks to be three to four weeks. You dont know, but thats what they project." Bourn had surgery on the hamstring in October following his first season with Cleveland. He began this year on the DDL after having a setback in spring training.dddddddddddd Bourn was pulled from Saturdays game against Kansas City after he re-injured his leg while scoring from second base in the eighth inning. "A lot of it will be determined by when we leave for the break, how he feels," Francona said. "If hes starting to be pain-free, obviously it will be a little quicker." Bourn said Sunday his leg was sore and that he was frustrated by the latest setback. Hes batting .267 with seven stolen bases and 37 runs scored in 66 games. Jason Kipnis will likely bat in the leadoff spot while Bourn is sidelined. All-Star Michael Brantley has moved from left field to centre. Bourn signed a four-year, $48 million contract before last season. Outfielder Nyjer Morgan, who played centre field when Bourn began the season on the DL, will seek a second opinion on his sprained right knee this week. Morgan was injured in May. ' ' ' |
