BALTIMORE -- Wade Miley punched a cooler in the dugout after the sixth inning, and the frustrated Baltimore Orioles lost again.Josh Donaldson hit his fourth homer in two days and Jose Bautista also went deep in support of Marco Estrada, leading the Toronto Blue Jays over the fading Orioles 5-1 on Monday night.Toronto maintained a two-game lead over the Red Sox for the AL East lead, while Baltimore fell four games back. The Orioles have lost four of five and are clinging to the second wild card.We just got to play ball, Miley said. Weve got plenty of games against Toronto. Its in our own hands. We just got to play ball games.Miley (8-11) allowed three runs and five hits while tying a season high with nine strikeouts over seven innings. He has lost three of six starts since being acquired from Seattle on July 31.Wade was good, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. Mixed in a lot of different looks and gave us a good chance. A good seventh inning to get one more inning out of him.Miley retired the first 10 batters before allowing Donaldsons 34th home run. Troy Tulowitzki gave the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead later that inning with an RBI single.Bautista provided a two-run cushion when he led off the sixth with his 16th homer, and Miley took out his frustrations on the water cooler a few minutes later.Estrada (8-6) allowed one run and four hits with four strikeouts over seven-plus innings. The Blue Jays have won three of his four starts against the Orioles this year.J.J. Hardy provided Baltimores only run with his eighth homer in the third. But thats about all Baltimore could muster against Estrada.Weve had trouble with him for a while, Hardy said. He locates his pitches, kind of right on the top. His fastball is sneaky. He can elevate it. He can pitch down with it, and his changeup is a really tough pitch.Donaldson hit a solo homer in the fourth to tie it 1-1. The reigning AL MVP had three homers in a 9-6 win over Minnesota on Sunday.Hes such a good player, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. When hes doing his thing, it makes such a big difference for this team. It really sets everything up.The Blue Jays added two more runs in the ninth on an RBI single by Justin Smoak and a fielders choice by Devon Travis off Tommy Hunter.LEADING OFFJonathan Schoop batted leadoff for the first time in three years with the Orioles and went 0 for 4 with a pair of strikeouts.TRAINERS ROOMOrioles: CF Adam Jones was out of the starting lineup for the third straight game with a left hamstring strain. ... Right-hander Chris Tillman, on the 15-day DL with right shoulder bursitis, threw on flat ground without any setbacks. He will play catch again Wednesday before throwing off a mound.UP NEXTBlue Jays: Left-hander J.A. Happ (17-4, 3.19) had his 11-game winning streak snapped in his last start against the Angels. Happ has won both of his two previous outings against Baltimore this season.Orioles: Ubaldo Jimenez (5-11, 6.62 ERA) is back in the rotation with the injury to Tillman. He took the loss in his past outing Thursday against the Nationals after allowing one run over six innings. . The Browns coaching search remains incomplete. . The deal is pending a physical, assistant general manager Bobby Evans said. Traded from Seattle to Baltimore on Aug. 30, Morse also can play first base and right field to give manager Bruce Bochy some flexibility in writing his lineup. . - Oakland Raiders running back Rashad Jennings was speaking to a group of local high school students earlier this week when the conversation turned to the importance of being prepared when opportunities in life arise. .J. Ellis hit two-run homers and the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 4-0 Saturday night. . Uniteds eighth defeat of a wretched campaign means Liverpool, which currently occupies the fourth and final Champions League place, could go nine points clear of its fierce rival by beating West Bromwich Albion on Sunday. Charlie Adam scored both of Stokes goals at Britannia Stadium either side of Robin van Persies equalizer, with a miserable day for seventh-place United capped by first-half injuries to centre halves Jonny Evans and Phil Jones that forced them off. PHILADELPHIA -- Tyler Anderson and the Colorado Rockies had a lot of trouble with Maikel Franco.Anderson gave up a three-run homer to Franco in the first inning, then was ejected after hitting the Phillies slugger the next time up Saturday night in a 6-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. On a hot, humid evening with a gametime temperature of 93 degrees and a heat index of 105, tempers flared in the fourth.Anderson plunked Franco on the knee with his first pitch. Franco stayed at home plate and stared out at Anderson while players from both teams barked at each other. Anderson moved toward Franco and appeared to tell him to go to first base and that he didnt hit him on purpose. He was just on the plate a little more than he was last time, so we wanted to go in and try to open up the outer half a little more, which is part of pitching, Anderson said. It happens all the time. I think he knows it wasnt intentional.Asked if he was mad, Franco said, A little bit because I wasnt expecting the ball coming. No punches were thrown, but both Anderson and Rockies manager Walt Weiss were ejected by plate umpire Eric Cooper. Anderson had to be restrained while walking angrily back to the dugout with shouts directed toward Cooper.Crew chief Gary Cederstrom told a pool reporter afterward that Cooper ejected Anderson without any prior warnings because the umpire felt the pitcher intentionally threw at Franco.I dont know whether he hit him on purpose or not, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said. It kind of looked like it. Im not going to argue with the umpire. Both Weiss and Anderson said the pitcher merely was trying to pitch inside. It doesnt look good, but he definitely wasnt trying to hit him, Weiss said. We dont operate that way.Philadelphia had two batters hit by pitches, the Rockies got hit once. Although Cederstrom said warnings were issued to both teams following the ejections, nothing came of the subsequent two hit batters.Asked if there was any correlation betwween the hit batsmen, Weiss said, None whatsoever.ddddddddddddCesar Hernandez had two hits while extending his on-base streak to 20 straight games for the Phillies, who won their third straight.Daniel Descalso and Tony Wolters homered for Colorado, which has lost six of seven. Carlos Gonzalez extended his major league-leading hitting streak to 19 games. The Rockies lost despite outhitting Philadelphia 13-6.We didnt get the big hit, Weiss said. We had some opportunities. We scattered our hits. We didnt get the big one, to put up a big inning. We were grinding offensively, but we just couldnt get the timely one.Jerad Eickhoff (8-12) won despite giving up three runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. Jeanmar Gomez got his 30th save.Franco hit his 21st homer, stopping an 0-for-10 rut by connecting off Anderson (4-4).Freddy Galvis singled home Franco in the fourth to make it a four-run advantage. The Rockies climbed back in the sixth when Descalsos two-run shot and Wolters solo homer pulled them within 4-3.NEW STREAKDavid Dahl doubled twice for the Rockies. He was hitless Friday night, stopping his major league-tying 17-game hitting streak to start a career.QUICK NIGHTAndersons outing was the shortest of the 26-year-olds career and snapped a string of eight straight starts with at least six innings. Its just frustrating because your job as a starting pitcher is to give us a chance, and I obviously didnt do that today, he said. Three innings and then putting a big, heavy weight on the bullpens shoulders because of that. Its really disappointing.TRAINERS ROOMRockies: Gonzalez (left ankle sprain) made his first start since Monday.UP NEXTThe teams complete the three-game series Sunday when Phillies LHP Adam Morgan (1-7, 6.65) faces RHP Tyler Chatwood (10-7, 3.58). Morgan is begin recalled from Triple-A to fill Eflins spot in the rotation. ' ' '74.Yorkshire have their eyes on the follow on target which lies a distant 209 runs away; Gale may also be relieved to score what would be only his second fifty of the Championship season, although it is probably three figures that he craves rather more and the return of the famous pennant most of all. Lancashire know that the new ball is only 18 overs away and are still nursing fond hopes of what would be their first victory in a four-day Roses match at Old Trafford since 2000. ' ' ' |
