Heavyweight titleholder Deontay Wilder has had one surgical procedure already on his broken right hand and will have another one on it -- as well as his torn right biceps -- probably later this week, trainer and co-manager Jay Deas told ESPN.com on Monday.Wilder broke his hand and tore his biceps in a dominant eighth-round knockout of Chris Arreola to retain his world title for the fourth time on July 16 in front of a home state crowd at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.Wilder suffered the injuries in the fourth round, during which he dropped Arreola and nearly knocked him out but then stopped using his right hand, his best weapon, for the rest of the fight.Deas said Wilder had a very minor surgery this past Tuesday in which the doctor inserted temporary pins his hand and lined up his bones to help speed up the time it takes for the severe swelling in the hand to go down. They secured his hand so the swelling will go down and when it has gone down sufficiently they can go in and correct what needs to be corrected in another surgery, Deas said.Deas said the tentative schedule is for Wilder to have hand surgery on Thursday or Friday. At the same time, the plan is also to have the needed surgery on his damaged biceps. We are trying to coordinate both surgeries at the same time so Deontay is not in a cast for three or four months while his hand heals and then needs to still get his biceps done after that, Deas said.dddddddddddd. Having them both at the same time is a way to cut down on the recovery time he needs. The blessing in disguise is that even though the hand surgery is much more complicated than the biceps surgery the biceps takes longer to heal. So Deontays hand will be well before his biceps, which will give his hand even more time to rest because he will have to wait for the biceps to be clear before he can use the hand. The hand will be better than it will have been in years.Wilder (37-0, 36 KOs), 30, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is almost surely out for the rest of 2016. This is at least the third time Wilder, a devastating puncher, has broken his right hand. After a first-round knockout of Travis Allen in 2009 (Wilders seventh professional fight), Wilder had right hand surgery during which pins were inserted to stabilize it. The shots he landed on Arreola were so powerful that he bent those pins.Wilder also suffered a stress fracture in the same spot during his world title victory against Bermane Stiverne in January 2015, although he did not require a second surgery.
