ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays struck out in record fashion and lost their home finale on a strange play at the plate.Dustin Pedroia used nifty baserunning to score from first base on David Ortizs double in the 10th inning and the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox beat the Rays 3-2 on Sunday for their 11th consecutive win.Pedroia singled off Eddie Gamboa (0-1) to start the 10th. The relay throw on Ortizs hit to right center beat Pedroia to plate, but he avoided catcher Luke Mailes first tag.Pedroias momentum carried him past the plate and when he went back to touch it, Maile was charged with an error when the ball dropped out his glove on another tag try.I dont have a good explanation other than that the ball seemed to be, from what I heard, was coming loose as Maile tagged (Pedroia), Rays manager Kevin Cash said. The call confirmed after a video review that lasted 39 seconds. Its obviously a strange play, Maile said. I dont really know the timing of when the ball left the mitt. Its a play youve got to make.Pedroia hit a solo homer and Mookie Betts extended his hitting streak to 11 games with an RBI single for the Red Sox.Boston starter Eduardo Rodriguez struck out a career-high 13 in 5 1/3 innings. The left-hander and Heath Hembree combined to strike out 11 consecutive batters to establish a major league record. The New York Mets held the previous mark when Tom Seaver struck out 10 in a row against San Diego in 1970.Boston also set a club record by striking out 21 through nine. Joe Kelly (4-0) added two in the 10th as the Rays became just the fifth big league team to strike out 23 or more in a game. There was a moment of silence before the game for Miami pitcher Jose Fernandez, who was killed in a boating accident early Sunday. Fernandez played high school baseball in nearby Tampa after defecting from Cuba.A very emotional day, Ortiz said. I was thinking about Jose the whole game. Its hard to believe. A very sad day.The Rays planned to honor Ortiz before his final game at Tropicana Field but canceled the ceremony at Ortizs request after Fernandezs death. He had three hits and moved past Frank Thomas for 107th place on the career list with 2,469 hits.Ortiz has 35 homers and 90 RBI at Tropicana Field, which is the most of any visiting player. Alex Rodriguez is next with 30 homers and 73 RBI.HONORING BIG PAPIRays 3B Evan Longoria and RHP Chris Archer informally presented Ortiz with an oil painting of his 500th home run, which he hit at Tropicana Field last season. Ortiz was also given 34 special handmade Diamond Crown Maximus cigars and $5,000 donations in his name to the Miracle League of St. Petersburg, Florida and the University of South Florida Latino scholarship program.HOME WOESTampa Bay (65-90) went 36-45 at home. ... The Rays home attendance for the season was a majors-low 1,286,163. Its a slight increase from last years 1,247,668.TRAINERS ROOMRays: CF Kevin Kiermaier was hit by a pitch in the second and later departed with a bruised left wrist. X-rays were negative.UP NEXTRays: LHP Drew Smyly (7-11) will face White Sox RHP James Shields (3-11) Monday night in the first of four games in Chicago. . LUCIE, Fla. . The Nashville Predators were glad their captain was still on their side. Weber had a goal and two assists, and Roman Josi scored the shootout winner to lift the Predators to a 4-3 win over the Flyers on Thursday night. . 24 Baylor in a Big 12 clash between teams trending in opposite directions. Andrew Wiggins made 10-of-12 from the foul line and scored 17 for Kansas (14-4, 5-0 Big 12), which capped a stretch of four straight games against ranked opponents unscathed. . Most important, perhaps, it went off without a hitch. Organizers poked a little fun at the now-infamous opening ceremony gaffe that saw only four out of five snowflakes open up into rings, leaving the Olympics logo one ring short. . The 43-year-old closer, in his 19th and final big league season, has said hed like to play the outfield. Yankees manager Joe Girardi says hes thinking about allowing Rivera to do it this weekend, when the Yankees finish their season with a three-game series at the Houston Astros. Ben Barba has been released from his playing contract by premiers Cronulla and faces a 12-week ban if and when he returns to the NRL in the wake of testing positive to cocaine. The Sharks released a statement on Tuesday saying fullback Barba would be taking time away from the game to address some significant personal issues. The club said the former Dally M Medal winner had on Monday night left to attend an overseas rehabilitation program.I know and accept I need to take some time away from the game to deal with some personal issues, Barba said in a statement.I am accountable for myself and my actions and if I dont address them now I will certainly ruin my career and more importantly my life and that of my family.I hope to return to the game at some stage and am very grateful for the support of the Cronulla Sharks and I hope that one day I can again play beside this terrific bunch of guys. The NRL confirmed the positive test, returned just days after Cronullas breakthrough grand final triumph, was Barbas second positive sample under the NRLs illicit drug testing program.ddddddddddddThe first positive test was recorded in 2015.Given Barba has now been released from his contract with the Sharks, he will serve the mandatory 12-match suspension if he returns to the NRL in the future.Barba is the third player suspended under the NRLs illicit drug program, following former South Sydney centre Kirisome Auvaa and Cronulla under-20s player Jayden Walker.Cronulla CEO Lyall Gorman said the immediate focus for the club was helping Barba get his life together off the field. This is an incredibly difficult situation for Ben, his family and our club and all involved with it, Gorman said. While Ben will be a major loss to our football club, the far greater priority is for him to focus on his long term future away from football and we will continue to support Ben throughout that process in any way we can.
