Ubisoft will revert changes it made to icons and other ascetics in Rainbow Six Siege to comply with content restrictions in Asian territories. Earlier this month Ubisoft announced it would remove some of the aesthetic content in Rainbow Six Siege restricted in Asian territories. The changes were made across the board to make things easier on the development team.
Today, however, Ubisoft released a new blog post announcing that it has made the decision to revert assets to their original state after "following the conversation with our community closely over the past couple of weeks, alongside regular discussions with our internal Ubisoft team". It said that it wanted to "ensure that the experience for all our players, especially those that have been with us from the beginning, remains as true to the original artistic intent as possible."
The changes were planned to come with the major year 3, season 4 update as part of Operation Wind Bastion - the next content expansion which adds two new Moroccan Operators and one new map, Fortress, alongside a lengthy series of bug fixes and tweaks. Ubisoft tarnishing their artistic integrity to comply with the Chinese government wasn't seen as a positive thing for the game, brand, or developer, and the community made that known in forums, Reddit, and social media.
The impact undoing these changes will have on Operation Wind Bastion is currently unclear. Reinstating the removed or changed elements will require more certification, bug testing and optimisation, which might delay future, planned updates for Wind Bastion. It’s also not confirmed whether this means the game will feature the content that China deems problematic, although players in other Asian territories will now be receiving the same version of the game as the rest of the world.
As for existing players in Asian territories, Ubisoft explained that they "can continue enjoying the same game as the other players", suggesting that they too will see Rainbow Six Siege's assets reverted to their original form. It's unclear what, if anything, remains of Ubisoft's original plans to "ensure compliance" with local regulations in certain Asian territories, or indeed if it even still believes that such changes are required.
Ubisoft has now detailed plans to revert these aesthetic changes, meaning the upcoming Operation Wind Bastion update won't feature censored assets.
